COUNTRY'S LARGEST SOLAR ROOF HALF-WAY COMPLETE

ATLANTIC CITY - This sprawling landscape of solar panels is not out in some desert like you'd expect, it's on the massive roof of the Atlantic City Convention Center.
"Oh we love it, we are a big building and we've always taken pride in our size," says Janet Mitrocsak, facilities director of the Convention Center.
Soon the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority's facility will have the distinction of possessing the largest single–roof solar panel system in the country; 13, 486 panels.
It could produce enough power for nearly 300 homes a year and reduce enough carbon dioxide to save about 15 acres of trees.
"I mean we're using the sun and there's no toxic chemicals coming out of that," says Darnell Everett, the project manager.
The best part of the project could be the fact that it's free for the Authority.
The equipment was purchased and installed by Pepco Energy Services of Virginia, and they’ll do all the maintenance.
"What we do in return is we buy electricity from them and we buy it at a reduced rate," says Mitrocsak.
The facility has been paying 15 cents per kilowatt-hour off the power grid; soon they'll buy about a quarter of their energy from Pepco at 10.3 cents.
That will save hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
2 more bonuses: a new $2.5 million energy-efficient roof was part of the deal, and it's installed by New Jersey workers from Ray Angelini Inc, out of Sewell.
"Creating new jobs for companies for people that need jobs, energy is the way to go," says Everett.
"You know you have the ACUA with the wind turbines and the Convention Center with the renewable solar projects so I think it's all good for county and the area and it shows the commitment to the environment," says Mitrocsak.
If all goes to plan the project will be completed by December 31st.
