CAPE MAY CO.-- It's been seven years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks and police officers from around the country continue to ride to keep the memory of those who lost their lives in the line of duty, alive. Jennifer Husko joined them on their journey through Cape May County while they peddle towards Ground Zero.
Nearly 150 police officers from around the country geared up this morning for day two of a four day, 265-mile trek towards Ground Zero. "We did... 07 (miles) yesterday from Pentagon to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and we took the easy way over...the ferry...laugh," said Tour de Force 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride Director, Mike DePaolis.
After the September 11th terrorist attacks, Americans came together as one.
In 2002, the group started the Tour de Force Memorial Ride to never forget those who lost their lives, but today it's grown to much more than just that. "Our mission is to raise funds for families of cops who get killed in the line of duty each year...and that's nationwide."
As they took off to start the day's 75-mile ride along route 9 through Cape May and Atlantic Counties, many can't seem to find the words to describe what it feels like to come together for such a meaningful cause.
"I don't even know if I can describe it in words, it's amazing, all of these police officers have come together to do this ride for those who can't...it's an unbelievable experience," said Amy Pedlow, Police Officer for the University of Buffalo, NY.
Residents at the Ocean View Center for Rehabilitation cheered each and every rider as
they passed by.
And New York City Police Officer, Rob Jones made sure to stop for a quick hug from his supportive aunt, Judy Echols. "It's such a great cause to raise money for families that lost their loved ones."
And each year, they will continue to ride in unity for their brothers and sisters in the police force whose families need them the most. "It's not a lot, but we try to do the best we can for each other," said DePaolis.
The last stop on Tuesday will be in Ocean County. To date the event has raised $250 thousand dollars, if you would like more information or to donate to the cause, click on the links section of our website.
The Tour de Force Memorial Bike Ride will end on September 11th with a ceremonial ride into Ground Zero.
