VENTNOR---For many, Saint Patrick's Day wouldn't be the same without indulging in some Irish traditions! At Jagielky's Homemade Candy Store in Ventnor, customers are buying up their famous Irish Potatoes!
The owner Mike Carr explains the cooking process, "We take evaporated milk, highly processed sugar, we heat it up, then we put the dried coconut, then we mix corn syrup and sugar in that bucket, put it on the stove, cook it up to 24 something degrees and then we put it in our three-foot spiral beater and then we add fondue and vanilla flavor, put it in the bucket, then we roll it up into Irish Potatoes." Then they're individually wrapped, boxed and ready to be purchased.
According to Annamarie Dion, the Manager, some are even shipped out to customers all over the country, "Most of our customers used to live here at one time or their relatives that live here go to visit, bring our candy and once they taste our candy-that's it! They're hooked on us and we ship it everywhere."
Even though it’s St. Patrick’s Day and people are buying Irish Potatoes, employees here say they're also making Easter Eggs since Easter is early this year, less than a week away, "We had to combine both, so we're doing the Irish Potatoes and the coconut cream eggs at the same time," says Dion, "I'm sure after today, we're going to be flooded with just the coconut cream eggs."
So, whether you're in the mood for a chocolate egg or an Irish Potato this candy store will certainly cure your sweet tooth!
