VENTNOR CITY COMMISSIONERS HAVE NEW COMPETITION

VENTNOR CITY - Some Ventnor residents say it’s time for a change on the City Commission.
"This is an administration that's been there for nearly 12 years, it's deeply entrenched and we don't think that's good for the town," says John Piatt, a county employee, who has a teamed up with businessman Stephen Weintrob, and former board of education member Theresa Kelly to run as city commissioners.
"We found each other and we're on our way to make a serious change for Ventnor and we're finding that the people of Ventnor are overwhelmingly supportive," says Piatt.
The new candidates say current commissioners Tim Kreischer, Sandy Vespertino and Joe Schafer have not done enough to keep local property taxes from skyrocketing.
"They never really explain why the taxes are increasing at such a pace as they are," says Weintrob.
They also say the government should be more accessible.
Weintrob says if his slate wins, "Nobody will ever walk out of city hall without having their problem heard and have somebody there in a responsible position to do something about it."
While the trio of political hopefuls thinks they can do a better job in City Hall, incumbent mayor Tim Kreischer has no plans of relinquishing his office.
Kreischer says, "We're looking forward to the challenge and we're looking forward to putting our record out there and how we spent money."
Money spent for instance on a state of the art library.
"If you look around Ventnor, it's obviously a better Ventnor, every site we've improved on: a better beach, a better boardwalk; our school system has been improved," says Vespertino.
But just how happy residents are with the current regime will be decided during the election May 13.
