WILDWOOD CREST-- A coastal breeze offered some relief from Sunday afternoon's oppressive temperatures. Those at the Greater Wildwood Yacht Club took full advantage of the favorable conditions. "This is very good sailing weather, its very good," said Greater Wildwood Yacht Club Vice Commodore B.J. Burns.

The steady wind filled sails at the club's annual regatta. The event brought local sailors to Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest where they competed in Laser and smaller Sunfish boats. The name of the game is to navigate around orange buoys and cross the finish line. However, there is some strategy involved.

"In order to get there through the breeze they do something called tacking. It's sailing back and forth across the breeze," said Deborah Rogers with the Greater Wildwood Yacht Club.

Area sailors of all ages and experience levels were allowed to compete. Something many think makes this 72-year-old tradition so special.

"So we've had sailors from 10 years old to 68 years." Said Rogers.

"I think its great to know these young people are getting out to sail, its great experience for them," said Sea Isle Yacht Club member Tom Doris.

This gives the younger sailors a chance to learn from their mistakes. Still this is a Mid-Atlantic Racing Association Championship event with awards and serious bragging rights on the line. With more area races coming up there is even a chance for seasonal awards. Win or lose, many here say if your having fun, sailing is a breeze.

"Everybody is a kid when they are out in the water," said Rogers.
