VACATION CLUB CON ARTIST'S LATEST TARGET IS SOUTH JERSEY

EGG HARBOR TWP.- In May, the State Office of The Attorney General opened a lawsuit against a man they say scammed thousands of dollars from hundreds of people by running a vacation club under several different names and now this vacation con artist is now targeting South Jersey residents.
About a week ago, Nancy Orlando of Linwood received a card in the mail that offered her an opportunity that seemed too good to be true. “It said I could get a Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Celebrity Cruise from 8 ports in the US, including two free airline tickets.”
All she had to do for a free dream vacation was attend a 90-minute seminar at a newly opened travel club in Egg Harbor Township called Blue Water.
There, they set her and her friend, Loretta Meredith up in plush lounge chairs and Nancy says they then played on their emotions. “They disarm you, they even say upfront I know you may think this is a scam, you think this is too good to be true but it’s not…they have it down just right and you trust them.”
But after the presentation, the couples were separated in different rooms to talk with a ‘closer’ who tried to negotiate and seal the deal.
Nancy and her husband turned down the offer for a one-week condo package and unlimited vacation offers for $22 hundred dollars because it was just out of their price range.
But just a few doors away, Loretta and her husband took the same package offered to Nancy for a whopping $15 hundred dollars more. “It seemed legitimate at the time. When I got home I realized so many red flags… got caught off guard,” said Loretta Meredith.
The two then found out, and the State Office of the Attorney General confirms, the owner, Daryl T. Turner, who’s name can be seen on a random business card in the blue water office Monday, had scammed hundreds out of thousands of dollars.
The Attorney General even opened a lawsuit against him last May stating the company's promises were indeed a scam. “They said they’ve been trying to track him down for quite a while but he keeps moving and changing the name of the company so before they can get to him he’s shut down and gone.”
We went to blue water in an effort to confront turner or other sales people. Calls to the number listed on Turner’s card also went unanswered.
But even though the doors were locked, the lights were on and informational clipboards waited for their next victims signature.
Since these two friends learned the hard way that the best things in life aren’t free, Loretta wants to make sure others don’t fall for Turner’s tricks. “There were so many people there, so many people before us, so many people after us…I want this to stop.”
The State Division of Consumer Affairs has received over 350 complaints on Turner’s other vacation club companies but a spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office says they have received no complaints on his newest venture, Blue Water. Loretta says she called and left a message but has yet to hear back. The Atlantic County Division of Consumer Affairs received one call last week from a skeptical consumer and we’re told the state is now actively investigating.
Immediately after learning about the scam, Loretta Meredith cancelled her credit card payment to Blue Water. Even though Nancy Orlando attended the 90-minute sales seminar she did not receive the 8 day 7 night free cruise promised to her.
Turner’s other travel companies named in the lawsuit include, Modern Destinations Unlimited, Dreamworks Vacation Club, Dream Vacations International, Five Points Travel Company and Bentley Travel.
