NORTHFIELD--For seven weeks now, we've been following reporter Phaedra Laird and Meteorologist Monica Ott as they undergo a total body transformation with the help of the pros at Island Gym. Tonight the ladies share another important part of their workouts.
From treadmills to free-weights and even machines, we've shown you the ins and outs of our workout routine, but we need to change things up to continue to change our bodies. "The body is so brilliant, and the way that we're designed is so brilliant that we can predict what we're going to do," said Hesh Donnerstag, the head trainer at Island Gym, "so a big part of losing weight and a big part of your losing weight is having a variety."
That's where the total body workout known as Art of Strength comes in. "Art of Strength is based on vintage lifts that the strongmen from hundreds of years ago used to actually perform," said Hesh, "so what we're doing is we're using our entire body in concert to actually move the weights. It's a pretty neat concept - the actual class burns 1200 calories in just 45 minutes."
While this class may look chaotic, there is a method to the madness. "What we do is set up anywhere between 10-12 station that people rotate through for one minute," said Hesh, "we do that non-stop for 2-3 rotations, depending on how many people are in class."
"While many of the exercises may be difficult, knowing that I only have to do it for a minute makes it seem easier," said Monica, "I know I can stay strong for 60 seconds no matter how difficult the exercise."
"When you're doing a strenuous exercise, typically, one minute is the cutoff between success and failure," said Hesh. In this class, though, failure is not an option, no matter how demanding the workout may be. The trainers are there to keep you on track and to keep the program moving along.
From cleans and presses, to kettle bell dead lifts, and even wall sits, it's an intense workout to say the least. "Being a championship bodybuilder in my past, I never felt like I worked out until I become a part of A.O.S.," said Hesh, "and I've had some grueling workouts, but what it did was not only change my life as a human being, it also changed my life as a personal trainer."
If you're still skeptical about A.O.S., give a class a try. In 45 minutes, you'll understand how it's possible to burn 1200 calories in just one session. Monica and I know first hand that it's possible. And while the actual workout may be grueling, that feeling is immediately replaced by satisfaction from a job well done when it's over.
