BRIGANTINE--The city's mayor delivered his state of the city address Wednesday night in front of city council.
Mayor Philip Guenther says overall the city is dealing fairly well with the nation's current economic climate.
While Brigantine is not immune to the current situation, city projects have continued to move forward such as a new community center.
The mayor also does not expect any layoffs to be made this year because of a reduction in staffing through attrition.
"We hope 2010 is a recovery year and we hope that we're able to continue to have the services and quality of life that we've enjoyed on our island community," says Guenther.
Also introduced at Brigantine's council meeting was the launch of "Slam Dunk the Junk".
With this program, Brigantine is committed to keeping the city clean and green through proper recycling methods.
"Slam Dunk the Junk" will gear towards the city's youth, and hopefully teach students to respect the environment and get them involved in “going green” initiatives.
And officials say it is a collaborative effort that will make the program successful.
"We got great volunteers, a great mayor, a great city council supporting these programs, so without the support of the resident, we couldn't put on a program like this," says Joe Campitelli of the Brigantine Clean Communities Council.
On hand Wednesday was also New Jersey's Clean Communities mascot, Garbage Goat.
