SOMERS POINT- Thanksgiving Eve is traditionally one of the biggest "going out" nights of the year. Local bars are gearing up for the big night and are reminding everyone to play it safe by using a designated driver.

It's the calm before the storm at Charlie's Bar and Restaurant as they gear up for what is sure to be a busy night. "Historically, it's one of the biggest drinking nights of the year," said Lisa Mell, General Manager.

It's not really clear why tonight became such a popular night to go out, but it makes sense that it revolves around everyone coming together for the holiday. "Everybody's coming home to be with their families tomorrow, so tonight's the kick off," explained Mell.

While tonight it typically a night of celebration, officials warn that it could take a tragic turn if you get behind the wheel after you've been drinking. "All it takes is one bad decision to change your life," said Bill Elliott, chair of the Hero Campaign. That's why he's asking everyone to make the right decision by using a designated driver. "The whole idea of being a hero and being a designated driver is making those plans ahead of time, not to be in the middle of the night and say...gee, are you OK to drive? That's the wrong time, the right time is ahead of time."

So, while making plans like where you'll be heading out and when, also decide who will stay sober. Many bars and restaurants participate in the hero campaign, which means free soft drinks for the D.D. "It's no longer the fact that the designated driver is a party pooper," said Elliott, "we believe the designated driver is the life of the party." Who could be saving many lives, just by taking on the responsibility of abstaining for the night.
