NEWARK--A one-day operation to collect prescription and over the counter medicine has made a heavy impact on New Jersey.
"Operation Medicine Cabinet" collected over 9,000 pounds of medicine on Saturday.
The collection holds a street value of over $35 million.
The program encourages the disposal of unused, unwanted, and expired medicine, as well as any other drugs that happens to be around the house, ensuring it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
More than 400 collection sites were set up across New Jersey.
This was the first statewide medicine disposal day in the nation, and organizers are hoping to bring the program to other states.
