BRIGANTINE--Another sad ending for a whale that washed up on a South Jersey beach.
A "sub-adult pygmy sperm whale" washed up on 11th Street North beach in Brigantine Thursday afternoon and was being cared for at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.
Thursday night a cardio specialist diagnosed the whale with cardio failure, a condition that is typical in this type of species.
Officials say the whale most likely was under a great deal of stress, causing its heart to beat rapidly.
The whale was euthanized Thursday evening.
This is the second pygmy sperm whale to be euthanized after beaching itself in South Jersey this month.
