GALLOWAY TWP.-- The special agent in charge of arresting dozens of state officials during this summer’s public corruption sting addressed a conference with elected officials from all over the state. The topic of his speech focused on ethics, character and leadership and dealing with public corruption.
Elected officials from all of the states 21 counties gathered for the 33rd annual Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey Conference.
During the opening ceremony, FBI Special Agent, Weysan Dun, who led the team in what's considered the largest single corruption sting in New Jersey's history spoke to the group about a common bond they have. "This organization has the distinct honor during its entire history of having only one member ever indicted with a crime and the crime had nothing to do with corruption," said Dun.
In the FBI since 1982, Dun, is no stranger to dealing with the state's problems with political corruption.
A two-year political corruption and international money laundering investigation ended this summer with Dun's team arresting 44 people including two mayors, two state assemblymen and five rabbis.
While none of the arrests involved officials here in South Jersey, it serves as a lesson for all public officials as he talked about ethics, character and leadership. "With the message I constantly reinforce with employees of the FBI is that we are here to serve the public, public service is in fact a public trust."
The most important thing the FBI wants people and elected officials to know is that they should come forward with information because corruption simply won't be tolerated. "It certainly is a challenge here, I feel like we're making headway…we have to create an environment and encourage others to create an environment where the willingness to report wrongdoing and misconduct is viewed as a character strength and not character weakness."
