ATLANTIC CITY -
It was a horrifying scene Friday evening as two people are dead after a 2 alarm blaze ravaged one Atlantic City home.
“On arrival there was heavy smoke and flames in the rear of the structure that extended from the ground floor up through the roof,” described Chief Dennis Brooks, Atlantic City Fire Department.
Firefighters pulled a female from the home, the victim suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation. The woman was transported to the hospital where she later died.
"It was like a disaster," said one witness.
"It was a big fire it was black smoke coming out of there," described another onlooker.
"The fire was so intense in the rear of the building that it also involved an automobile that was parked there, so that lit off as well," explained Brooks.
After searching the home for a third time, firefighters discovered the body of a second victim.
"We received that information on arrival from one of the neighbors who believed there were two people in the building," said Brooks.
The second and third floors were fully engulfed when personnel arrived at around 5P.M. The fast moving fire caused minor damage to the surrounding structure.
"The fire started at 4 North Providence and actually extended to 2 north providence in the rear and ran up the building and went into the building on the 4th floor of the building next door, so we put that fire out as well,” said Brooks.
"It look like it was going to come towards my house," said one neighbor.
While the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time, officials have a good idea where to begin their investigation.
"I know the fire was mainly in the rear of the ground floor, so that's where we're going to start looking," said Brooks.
Fire officials told NBC 40 they are not releasing the names of the victims at this time and they will be back out at the scene Saturday to try and determine how this tragic blaze started.
