Inner-city kids get opportunity to have fun at the shore

NORTH WILDWOOD -  For a group of inner city kids from Philadelphia, a trip to the shore is something many have never experienced.

A local organization is providing this special summer opportunity for kids, who might not otherwise ever get to enjoy a day at the beach.

"I haven't been on vacation in a long time."

But Wednesday, that changed for Shawn Golden and 19 other kids from the West Philadelphia Community Center, as they descended on the North Wildwood beach for a day of fun and fresh air.

"It's fun to hang out with my friends, just have fun."

"I thought we were gonna stay in the house all day, but turns out we came here."

Despite some drizzle, the kids were determined to not let Mother Nature rain on their parade, and wasted no time jumping into the surf.

"It's freezing, gotta get used to it."

"The goal is to have children experience things they're not really used to experiencing," said Vince Hubach of Children's Fresh Air Home.

This day trip, and many others throughout the summer, are made possible through the Children's Fresh Air Home, a faith-based, non-profit organization that aims to provide an enriching summer experience at the shore in a safe, positive environment.

"It's not a great day, but I'll tell you what, she's don't care," said Hubach," They are just happy to be out of the city, somewhere new, somewhere exciting."

"Some of these kids dream about getting to the ocean for the day and they don't have the opportunity to, so this is very important," said Brandon Gilmore of the West Philadelphia Community Center.

It's a day that many of these inner-city kids have never experienced before.

"The wave are so big, it's like they bigger than me."

And one that they, and the organizers won't soon forget.

"It was a great road trip."

"The smiles on their faces are just, it's incredible."

The kids were also treated to a BBQ at the Fresh Air Home before returning back to Philadelphia.
