Dead whale tested positive for Morbilli virus

Posted: Updated:
Experts say the illness behind the massive dolphin die-off here at the Jersey Shore, and along the East Coast last year, is infecting other animals.

Officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center say the Minke whale that was found washed up on an Atlantic City Beach last month tested positive for the Morbilli virus.

It's the same illness blamed for 135 dolphin deaths in the Garden State alone last year, and in the late 80s, when there was also are large dolphin die-off.

Officials say they're concerned to find the measles-like virus in a large whale, which is not typical, and that there may be a re-occurrence of the illness again this year.

They are waiting for test results on two Bottlenose dolphins that recently washed up dead.
