Atlantic City Peacekeepers continue legacy of love

They’re easy to spot in their orange t-shorts, and that’s exactly what they want.

"As peacekeepers with this on, it's like you under construction and the community is under construction for peace to get rid of the violence,” said Atlantic City Peacekeeper Steven Young.

The mission of the Peacekeepers is to reclaim their communities through love; love of community, love of each other and love of themselves.

"There isn't a prescribed process we have to take. We can do this because it's necessary for our community,” said City Council Vice President Steven Moore.

This weekend the Peacekeepers are celebrating their anniversary, but they’re also honoring a deceased community leader who paved the way for what their team is doing: Mrs. Vergie Jordan.

"Vergie was just, I don't know how to put it, a plant that is still growing in all of us,” said family services supervisor Judy Grate.

In 1976, Mrs. Jordan founded the Stanley Holmes work team, dedicated to improving the quality of life for Stanley Holmes Village residents.

She died in 2009.

One of the Stanley Holmes Work Team's projects was cleaning up nearby playgrounds so neighborhood kids would have somewhere to play.

"Our young people need to see our elders care about them and continue to care about them and don't fear them. Miss Vergie was that pioneer. She didn't fear anybody,” laughed Young.

" 'Cause she was preparing them to live in a world that oftentimes was uncaring and unfair, and she gave them certain ingredients towards a productive life,” said Pamela James, Executive Director of the Atlantic City Housing Authority.

On Saturday Atlantic City will dedicate a street in her name and the housing authority will rename the Stanley Holmes Community Room in her honor, while the Peacekeepers make sure her presence is always felt.

"Her presence of being that elder, that pioneer of being present for peace,” reflected Young.
