The dog days of summer are quickly approaching, and today the city of Wildwood passed a measure that will unleash the hounds.
The board of commissioners passed an ordinance that allows year round access to the beach and boardwalk for man's best friend.
Pets were only allowed on the beach October through may.
But the ordinance passed this evening designates an area of the beach for man's best friend to enjoy Frisbee, fetch and dog paddling in the water.
The board says this could potentially drive tourism.
"The pets have become so much a part of the family and now we're going to take what was going to be a day tripper and turn them into a multi-day tripper, because they're going to be able to bring their pets," said Peter Byron, Commissioner of Revenue & Finance and Beach Services.
The Wildwood dog beach will be a block and a half in length and feature water stations, doggy bags and signs telling dog owners to clean up after their pets.
The measure goes into effect Memorial Day weekend.
