Panel to look at New Jersey education funding

Posted: Updated:
New Jersey lawmakers are preparing to ask questions about Gov. Chris Christie's plan to fund schools.

The subsidies make up a huge part of the state budget. For the fiscal year starting July 1, Christie wants to send nearly $8 billion of a $34.4 billion state budget plan to schools.

The governor also wants to send each district an additional $20 per student for the upcoming year.

Some lawmakers have asked why the state is no longer running an aide formula developed under the previous governor, Jon Corzine.

Under that model, schools would be receiving a total of $1 billion more than Christie is proposing, but some of them would be seeing their aid cut in the upcoming year.
