LUMBERTON, N.J. -
A man has been killed in a fire at a southern New Jersey motel.

The Burlington County prosecutor's office says fire crews responded around 8:50 Friday morning to the Travel Inn near the Mount Holly bypass in Lumberton.

A man's body was discovered in a room at the motel. His identity has not been released pending family notification.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, but officials say it was contained to the room where the man was found.

The prosecutor's office says Matthew Hempel, a lieutenant with Evesham Fire-Rescue, was driving by when he spotted the fire and responded.

Hempel entered the man's room several times, despite the smoke and flames, until he was able to locate him and carry him out.

Hempel was treated for smoke inhalation.
