Carving an Ocean City skatepark location

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN CITY - A new Ocean City skatepark may find a new home at Fifth Street and Asbury Avenue, taking up part of the parking lot.

"I just don't want to see what happened in 2011 happen again.  I want to see a skatepark happen and I want to see it stay open," said one Ocean City resident.

A city council workshop meeting was held Thursday evening to discuss plans for a new skate park in Ocean City.

"We're already known for surfing, we would have the ability to be a double threat in this market," said Councilman Michael DeVlieger, 1st Ward / Ocean City.

Overwhelming the standing room of ocean city, residents were in support of rebuilding a state of the art skate park. The location of the skate park, however, is up for debate.

“I don't want to see kids riding skateboards down Bay Avenue to get to an airport.  It needs to be in the middle of town," said another Ocean City resident.

The committee proposed that the skatepark be rebuilt in a small portion of the municipal parking lot behind the fire department headquarter on 5th Street and Asbury Avenue.

"That area of town also has a lot of parking need," said Councilman Peter Guinosso, 4th Ward / Ocean City.

"I'm committed to getting a skate park in the right location, at the right money for everybody in Ocean City," said Councilman Keith Hartzell, At Large / Ocean City.

The cost to build the state of the art skatepark is estimated at $750,000 of which the city council has allotted $250,000 in their budget.

"$250,000 is a small percentage of our budget, but it's a big investment in our kids," said DeVlieger.

The committee plans to apply for a grant from the "Green Acres Cape May County Open Space Recreation Funding" and sponsorships from various surfing and athletic companies to raise the necessary funds.

The final location of the park is still to be determined.
