The Atlantic County Sheriff's Office now has a new tool to fight crime.
The Sheriff's Department now has several officers armed with conducted energy devices also known as Tasers. The Sheriff says the idea behind the devices is to make suspects comply without having to use deadly force. Only officers certified for the safe use of the Tasers will be carrying the devices.
Atlantic County Sheriff, Frank Balles stated, "You would activate the spark, see the spark right here and that lets the perpetrator know that this is not a firearm, this is a CED."
Officers both in the courthouse and on the street will be able to carry the devices. Atlantic County is the first Sheriff's Office in the state to arm their officers with Tasers.
