OCEAN CITY -
And with this extreme cold, firefighters are getting a lot of calls about frozen pipes breaking and leaking.
Ocean City firefighters say the fluctuations in temperatures we've experienced recently are hitting unoccupied homes particularly hard ... Leaks usually aren't noticed until the water reaches outside the house.
This deep freeze has also hindered the department's ability to fight fires.
While fighting a small blaze early this morning they tapped multiple hydrants, only to find the water frozen inside.
"It's the first time I've experienced it. We've had some cold winters before but I've never seen a hydrant not open when we've gone to use it," said Chief Chris Brunig of the Ocean City Fire Department.
Freezing temperatures can also cause ice to form on fire hoses, making them difficult for firefighters to manipulate.
Evangelist Franklin Graham prayed on a sidewalk outside the Pentagon Thursday after his invitation to a prayer service inside was withdrawn because of comments that insulted people of other religions. More>>
