Veterinarian urges cold-weather caution for pet owners

UPPER TWP. -

A Local veterinarian was called into work on Christmas Eve to dispose of a dog that had been killed by exposure to the cold.

Police called Dr. Nick Holland Tuesday afternoon to inform him that a dead dog had been found at the intersection of Heilprin and Friedrichstadt Avenues in Woodbine.

Doctor Holland said the dog was emaciated and must have been wandering without food for weeks, but it wasn't malnutrition that he believes killed the pitbull.

"He had no evidence of any external injuries," said Holland, "There were no contusions or abrasions as if he'd been hit by a car. No signs of abuse, so I think it was the cold that killed him."

The veterinarian says that especially this time of year, it is important to advise animal control if you see any wandering dogs, not just for your safety, but to prevent the needless death of any other animals.
