New Jersey National Guard members help keep holiday shoppers safe
After a carjacking at the Short Hills Mall in Essex county left a man dead, some members of the New Jersey National Guard are doing what they can to keep shoppers safe.
Members of the New Jersey National Guard are out in force at shopping malls across the state, including right here at the Cumberland Mall in Vineland.
As New Jersey National Guard Sergeant Art Axelson tells us, this is just another way that the National Guard shows their commitment to community.
"We just want to put a presence out there, give people the option to have an escort to the vehicle especially after what happened at the Short Hills Mall," he tells NBC40. "It just really dawned on us that with the up tick of violence lately, especially in South Jersey, we could give a few hours of our time and have a good presence out there."
Sergeant Axelson says that they are not being ordered to do this, rather, he says it's just something that he and "a few of the guys" felt they should do.
