On Sunday, shock and disbelief in Margate, as residents learned that the dead body of a 79-year-old Margate City woman was found floating in the bay.
Margate Police say they were called to the area around the 700 block of Jerome Avenue for reports of a body in the water.
Dan Walsh lives across the street from where the body was found and told NBC40, "You just don't hear about that kind of thing in Margate. We're a very quiet town here and to hear a body was basically floating right outside of our house...we were very shocked."
Just before 2:30 Sunday afternoon, Margate Police, and the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, responded to the marina where they discovered the body of an unidentified woman floating in between a dock and an adjacent piling.
On Sunday night, detectives were still on the scene and appeared to be looking for something else in the murky water.
Margate residents are now wondering what happened.
Gus Quinzani, a Margate resident, said, "It's definitely something crazy. You just got to think like...what could have possibly happened to this person. I mean, an 82 year old, it's not like you're suspecting something like foul play. It's got to be some sort of accident. But I mean, even over the summer you would hear about dolphins washing up on the shore, but I think human bodies are a little more serious." Laura Pagano, another Margate resident, added, "You wonder if she had dementia or if she was sick, things like that. Did she just fall in? Who was watching her? Who should have been with her?
Detectives with the Margate City Police Department's Investigation Bureau say the case is on-going at this time.
UPDATE: Authorities say the incident does not appear to be suspicious and following the autopsy that took place Monday, all signs are pointing to an accidental drowning.
