Some people avoid the dentist’s office at all costs, but for some Armed Forces Veterans, the cost of dental care is exactly what they're avoiding.
Vincent Battaglia, a Navy Seal Veteran, said, "I'm on disability and I can't financially afford some of the dental work that I need to have done."
Luckily for Battaglia, one dentist in Mays Landing is giving back by offering free dental care.
Dr. Deryck Pham served in the Navy back in 2006. He says many veterans have a hard time getting the proper medical and dental care after returning home. Dr. Pham explained, "When you get out of the military, unless you are 100% disabled, you are not getting any kind of benefits. Their voices are just not being heard and it's a shame. So this is my way of trying to help their voice be heard."
In honor of Veteran's Day this coming week - on Saturday, Dr. Pham opened up his office to all veterans who wanted it.
Army Veteran, Sherri Lemieux, told NBC40, "That a dental office and oral surgeons are willing to volunteer their time and their employees’ hours and the work that they put in here and not charging us...it's just fantastic."
The Brickworks Dental practice brought in extra staff to perform everything from x-rays, exams, cleanings and fillings, to root canals and extractions...all at no cost to the vets.
Battaglia said, "I can't afford it and that's why I am so grateful that this is an opportunity for veterans."
Brickworks Dental in Mays Landing isn't the only practice providing free dental care to veterans. Dr. Deryck pham says he recruited friends, in the field, throughout the rest of the country, who are also providing this service to veterans this Veteran's Day Weekend. Pham explained, "I actually have 10 of my friends across the country doing the same thing today in their offices across the country. Hopefully next year, another 10 or another 20; and then turn it into something that is a national event."
