Current Senator Jeff Van Drew has won the Senate seat. With 72% of the votes counted in the 1st District Van Drew has beat Republican challenger, Susan Adellizzi-Schmidt with 59% of the vote to Adellizzi-Schmidt's 40%.
Van Drew stopped in Rio Grande where he thanked all of his supporters for standing by him and making sure he kept his Senate seat.
“As I’ve always said I am going to work hard to be bipartisan and I am going to fight for and stand up for the people of this district regardless of any repercussions.”
Van Drew was challenged by Republican Susan Adellizzi-Schmidt who waited for the results to come in with supporters in Cape May Court House.
She says while she did not win she is still going to do everything she can for the people of South Jersey.
“I own a communication agency in the area and I already work to promote businesses and organizations throughout the area and I am very passionate about promotion of this area in general and will continue that work.”
Both candidates say no matter the outcome they are proud of the work done during the campaign.
Van Drew says his work as Senator has already started, adding that he owes a huge thank you to his two running mates.
