Fire safety demonstrated at Ocean City Open House

Posted: Updated:

At the Ocean City Fire Department's annual open house, there were many demonstrations teaching children how to act in a fire situation.

Whether it's putting 'A Lid on It' in the kitchen...

"We have outside a live fire demonstration where were teaching people how to put out fires on the stove," says Captain Chris Breunig.

… Or teaching them to "get low and go" in a smoke-filled home.

"Once you crawl you can see a lot more," explains William Martin, Open House Chairman.

And, the young observers who came out to the open house were quick learners...

“Don't play with matches,” says a young girl.

“You don't just stand there you have to stop drop and roll, like stay low,” states another kid.

“Never play with lighters,” adds another kid.

The United States Navy, Forest Fire Service and State Police were just few of the many agencies that participated in the educational event.

“We were very lucky and privileged that state police came out with their helicopter as a demonstration purpose,” says Captain Breunig.

A helicopter that was undoubtedly a highlight as well as other attractions, like Smokey the Bear.

The Ocean City Fire Department's annual event not only highlights fire prevention but also shows the collaborative nature between all safety units in the area.
