EBT food stamp outage shocks New Jersey residents

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTIC CITY - If you tried to use your electronic benefits transfer card Saturday, and was having problems, you're not alone. Saturday, many shoppers experienced problems with the Electronic Benefit Transfer cards, otherwise known as EBT cards or bridge cards.

"This shutdown (EBT shutdown), has really really interfered with a lot of families. Some people need assistance and it's a shame," says an Atlantic City woman.

Across the nation and right here in New Jersey, shoppers could not purchase food Saturday using their EBT cards, because of what officials are calling a computer problem.

"I feel its going to leave a huge dent in these families because there is people who have 3 or 4 children," the Atlantic City woman continues.
According to reports, Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system experienced a power outage that caused the problem. Reports also suggest that despite the financial fears following Saturday's glitch, this is not in relation to the government shutdown.

"I think its horrible that people aren't able to get their food stamps. There are families out there that depends on these things, to feed their families," explains an Atlantic City man.

As for store owners like Mohammed Ali of the 7–11 in Atlantic City, he says he has already lost hundreds of dollars...and still counting.
"We're losing a lot of business. Losing a lot of business. In Atlantic City, we have customers and it's the beginning of the month.
Which is when EBT card holders receive their food stamp benefits. With this widespread outage affecting each state's welfare program, residents have mixed responses.

"Its going to make a lot of people very angry, so you guys better get on the ball," says the Atlantic City man.
"I've also been around long enough to know that you got to make the best out of it you can. This too shall pass," explains another.
