Atlantic City school library recognized with national award

Posted: Updated:

An Atlantic City school library is recognized with a national award.

The Pennsylvania Avenue School Library is the recipient of the 2013 National School Library Program of the Year.

The award recognizes school libraries that do an exemplary job of meeting the needs of their school and library environment.

The school's students have embraced the library, thanks in part to the librarian they've given the nickname, "Mama Media."

Jennifer Jamison Pennsylvania Avenue School library media specialist stated, "You need to advocate how important school libraries are. They shouldn't be in a fixed schedule, they should be participatory. Students should want to come here all the time. Because at that point they're gonna pick up and they're gonna create, they're gonna explore."

This is the first time an elementary school has won the award, and also the first time an urban elementary school has been honored this way.

In addition to a trophy, the school wins $10,000  for their library program.
