Posted: Updated:

The Coast Guard Coast Guard Cadence Contest of 2013 kicked off Monday and will release of a new cadence everyday through Friday.

Fans of the Coast Guard can pick the service’s Top Cadence of 2013 by “liking” it on Training Center Cape May’s Facebook page at or the Coast Guard YouTube Channel at through Oct. 14.

“The Coast Guard Cadence Contest allows service members from across the Coast Guard to educate our newest recruits,” said Capt. Todd Prestidge, the commanding officer of Coast Guard Training Center Cape May. “Everything we do here is aimed at educating and preparing future Coast Guardsmen for the rigors of service, and that includes when they call cadence.”

This is the second year Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, the Coast Guard’s only enlisted basic training facility, has hosted the contest. Authors from across the service submitted their cadence ideas, and a panel consisting of senior training center staff selected the Top 5 Cadences of 2013. Those finalists had their cadences filmed as they were sung by Recruit Company Quebec 188, which will be posted to Facebook and YouTube for public voting.

Fans of the Coast Guard can read more about the cadence authors and their inspiration for the cadence on the training center’s blog Their experiences and inspiration range from search and rescue cases to oil spill response.

Training Center Cape May prepares more than 80 percent of the Coast Guard’s entire workforce to conduct the service’s frontline missions around the world. The Coast Guard is among the most selective and recruits the most qualified applicants of the five armed services. This rigorous training program educates future Coast Guardsmen in everything from basic water survival to marksmanship, and many graduates will be conducting Coast Guard missions just days after basic training.
