Fire officials in Millville are asking the public to keep an eye out, after they say suspicious fires have added to their already busy shifts. These fires have many uneasy in the Cumberland County community.
The cleanup continues at site of the latest fire that authorities believe was likely intentionally set in Millville.“Scary.”Lez Agosto lives across from where the fire burned through an abandoned duplex last week,“I see the fire department, the trucks,” she said, and hearing it was the second abandoned duplex in the area to allegedly be set ablaze recently, makes her nervous, since her home is situated between two abandoned properties.“It's scary, this street is scary, you know, because you never know.”
“It's, it's very troubling.”In both cases, officials say the fires started in the back of the buildings, so it was some time before anyone noticed they were burning.By the time firefighters got on scene, the buildings were already fully involved.“We're playing catch up, trying to get ahead of it,” said Captain Michael Lippincott of the Millville Fire Department, “and often times, where its old and the wood's dry, we can't get ahead of the fire and ends up consuming the entire building.”
Fire officials say they've had a very busy month responding to all sorts of calls, and these fires drain their resources and jeopardize public safety.“What they need to realize is that even though they're choosing a vacant building, and maybe they're thinking we'll that's safe because no one lives there, when we respond, even though the building is boarded up, we have to make an assumption there may be someone inside,” said Lippincott about their response.
The situation puts not only firefighters at risk, but also other residents who happen to live near the fires.“That's been a great concern for us.”
Anyone with any information about the fires is asked to contact Millville Police at 856-825-7010.
