ESTELL MANOR -
Estell Manor officials hope a former juvenile detention center will get a new life helping our country's veterans.
The Manorwoods Juvenile Detention Facility has been closed for years and the mayor of Estell Manor would like to have the vacant property turned into an assisted living center for area veterans.
Thursday, local and county officials toured the 32 acre site and are working to determine if the proposed plan is workable.
"I had to put my thinking cap on and try and figure out what would be a good use for this building and I couldn't think of anything better then for our veterans and I do understand that there is a hundred million dollars that's been set aside by our president and hopefully we can use some of that to get this program started," said Mayor Joe Venezia.
If plans for a veterans assisted living center do not work out, the mayor would like to see the building used for a veteran's medical outpatient center.
