NOAA officially identifies shipwreck off Absecon Inlet

Posted: Updated:

After several decades a shipwreck off the coast of Atlantic County has officially been identified.

The Robert J. Walker was lost at sea in June of 1860.

A commercial fisherman discovered the wreck site back in the 1970's and Tuesday the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officially confirmed the identity of the Walker wreck.

The wreck is 85 feet under water and about 10 miles off Absecon Inlet.

NOAA used several key clues to confirm the identity of the ship including the size and layout of the iron–hull, unique engines, and rectangular portholes.

20 men died when the Coast Survey steamer sank after being hit by a commercial schooner.
