Preparations in Atlantic City are in full swing for the highly anticipated Miss America Pageant. Everything from planning extra events, to bumping up security for the main show.
"This is where she should be. This is where it all started." Home sweet home - that's where she will be when the glitz and glamour of the Miss America Pageant returns to Atlantic City.
Sam Haskell, C.E.O of the Miss America Organization, has been hard at work to make sure all the "I's" are dotted and the "T's" are crossed. "I can't believe on one week, just one week from right now we are going to be introducing 53 contestants at Kennedy Plaza when we open the 2014 Miss America Pageant."
200,000 people are expected to attend the Miss America "Show Me Your Shoes Parade" on the boardwalk September 14th, the day before the final event, when one lucky girl's life will change forever.
The anticipated large crowd is one of the main reasons why the Atlantic City Police Department is gearing up for some extremely busy nights. The department will be utilizing the show cameras, hotel cameras, and hidden cameras to keep security tight.
In addition to the technological security, on the night of the event each of the 53 contestants will be escorted by a uniformed police officer. Even more officers will be patrolling the streets and the boardwalk. Some will be in uniform, and some will be undercover.
"We anticipate officers, more than one officer probably at each street end." According to ACPD Sgt. Monica McMenamin, when attending ticketed events inside of Boardwalk Hall, all bags will be searched.
"We are asking folks to leave oversized bags, back packs and coolers at home. Of course there are no open containers on the boardwalk. Obviously don't leave any bags unattended."
If you plan on attending, get your tickets now. They are selling fast, and hotel rooms in the city are almost completely booked.
