Atlantic City Police make arrests in attempted car burglaries on Sovereign Ave.

Three people are in custody after police found them attempting to break into cars on Sovereign Ave. in Atlantic City Thursday morning.

According to police, witnesses say that four men were attempting to break into parked cars in the area. An officers later saw three young Hispanic men walking south on Sovereign Avenue. Police say they were looking in the windows of parked cars and pulling on car handles.

Two of the suspects fled on foot as the officer approached in her patrol car. She notified responding officers of the suspects descriptions and where they fled. One suspect complied with all orders given by the officer and was taken into custody.

Police identified him as 19-year-old Harry Gomez of Millville. Gomez was charged with Burglary and released on a summons.

A second suspect, later identified as a 16 year old boy, fled through neighborhood yards and refused officers orders to stop. He was caught by a K9 officer. The third suspect, also a 16-year-old boy, ran through yards and refused to stop for Police. He was caught in the unit north block of Chelsea Avenue. The boy refused to comply with police orders during the arrest, but surrendered when the K9 officer arrived.

Both 16-year-old suspects were charged with Burglary, Obstructing the Administration of Law and Resisting Arrest.

Police say the area has seen an increase of reports of car burglaries and thefts. Residents are reminded to lock their car doors, keep all valuable out of view and to report any suspicious activity and persons to the Police.
