24 year old Miami native Alfred Christian's body was discovered late Sunday morning in shallow water, at Lavender road in Wildwood Crest Beach.
"The Coast Guard cannot stress enough the importance of being safe while in the water, always swim in a well supervised area," says Petty Officer Nick Ameen of the US Coast Guard.
According to authorities, Christian who went into the water with four other friends, went missing while swimming after hours on a beach located off Taylor avenue.
"Witnessed going under struggling and not resurfacing. They called 911, the 911 call was relayed to the Coast Guard, and we immediately launched assets," he states.
Which included helicopters and a boat crew surveilling the area of the drowning all night into the morning.
"We were on our way to a routine patrol, and we got the call via cell phone, that there might be a possible person in the water," says Coast Guardsman James Pappas.
But what made this search and rescue more difficult, was that it happened around 7 in the evening, and nightfall was approaching fast.
"Approaching a case like this, its difficult. The sun is going down, time is against us, we're out there all night trying to find a survivor," says Ameen.
There were four survivors, but Christian was still missing.
"The boat I was on, we were first on scene for the Coast Guard until about 2:45 in the morning," says Pappas.
The crew that relieved them, searched until 9 am Sunday morning. A few hours later, at 11:51 am, Wildwood Crest Police Department received a call. A body had been discovered and it was Alfred Christian, brining a heartbreaking end to this search.
