The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for several New Jersey counties including Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland.
Atlantic County officials say a tornado watch is less severe than a warning but residents still need to be mindful and seek shelter should conditions worsen.
According to the National Weather Service the watch is in effect until 10 p.m. tonight and the watch means atmosphere conditions are favorable for tornadoes.
"Get indoors when you hear that tornado watch or if it goes to a tornado warning and you can hear the storm outside, or the storm is getting closer. You should go inside to a strong structural part of your house," said Atlantic County Director of Emergency Preparedness, Vince Jones.
Jones encourages residents to seek shelter in a basement or the center most location in the house away from windows.
