Assembly bill would bring horse racing to A.C. beaches

ATLANTIC CITY -

New Jersey lawmakers have advanced a plan that would take horse racing from the track to the beaches in Atlantic City.

The Assembly Budget Committee approved plans for an annual race, the first to be held on Columbus Day weekend this year.  The race format would resemble a traditional Italian race known as Il Palio, which has been run for 700 years in the streets of Siena.

Supporters of the bill say the races will help bring tourism to the city.
