ATLANTIC CITY -- Police foiled a robbery-in-progress early Sunday morning.

It happened just before 1 a.m. on the 3600 block of Ventnor Avenue.

Police arrived on scene at the Boom Food Market to find the glass door shattered and the cash register on the floor.

After seeing the suspect, identified by police as William Amaya, police surrounded the building.

The suspect fled, but K9 officer Sterling Wheaten and his K9 partner, Hagen, apprehended the suspect with help from officer Muhammad Kaiser.

Investigation showed Amaya is an alleged fugitive from Pennsylvania.

This was K9 officer Wheaten's first shift with Hagen since the Atlantic County Police K9 Graduation Friday May 3.
