Zumbathon raises money for American Liver Foundation

EGG HARBOR TWP. -- Over hundred people came together for a Zumba marathon Saturday to raise money for the American Liver Foundation.

The event was organized in the name of a little girl named Lilliana Hemstedt. Hemstedt was diagnosed as an infant with biliary atresia, a potentially deadly disease affecting the liver.

A surgery performed when she was just four weeks old has given her a somewhat normal life but as she grows older she could still need a liver transplant.

"I think when they look at a child, on child really deserves to have to live with a chronic illness and finding a way to eliminate that illness or improve maintenance of that illness is important to anyone," said Erika Hemstedt, Lilliana's mother.

The money raised at Saturday's event will go to the American Liver Foundation to help early diagnosis and prevention of biliary atresia and diseases like it.
