It's a sure sign that spring is here when terrapins start
popping up in South Jersey.
The warmer months are the turtles' nesting season, and it's a
common sight to see the reptiles crossing local highways. On the Margate causeway Saturday,
a group of volunteers, including Boy Scouts, worked with Margate Terrapin Rescue to make the road safe for turtles by installing special fences along the roadway.
Commercial crab traps are also among the leading causes of
death for the terrapins. According to one study, an estimated 14,000 turtles are killed each year in South Jersey.
