On Friday morning, 30-year-old Merry Abernathy was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, in her own home.
"It's scary, it's frightening, it's everything. It's unbelievable, very unbelievable," said Folsom resident Kay Schwechler. Another resident, Nancy Gergler, added, "Things like that don't really happen around here. It's a quiet, small town."
State police say it all started around 8 a.m. Friday morning when someone called 9-1-1 concerned about a man in the area.
"This morning I had driven by, maybe around 10 o'clock, and I had seen this whole road was basically blocked off," said neighbor, Lauren Gere, "I just saw cop cars...it's just...you knew something big was happening."
Shortly after the call, state troopers arrived at a house on Lenape Terrace and located 43-year-old Darrin Plumlee who was immediately taken into custody for questioning and medical treatment.
After entering the home, police say they found Abernathy's body with visible signs of traumatic injuries. Police say Plumlee has been charged with murder and is currently under guard at an area hospital where he was taken for a self inflicted injury.
Nearby residents say the couple kept to themselves. "Like, everyone you see riding around that we're stopping and talking to, we know all these people. They don't know people like that. They were very secluded," said Schwechler.
Neighbors say the couple had a young daughter. However, state police would not comment on the daughter's whereabouts or where she was at the time of the murder.
The exact cause and manner of Abernathy's death will not be available until a medical examiner's investigation is completed.
