(Glassboro, NJ) – Richard Stockton (12-10, 0-3 NJAC) nearly erased a five-run deficit in the ninth inning before their comeback stalled in a 9-7 defeat at Rowan (12-7, 1-2). The Ospreys scored three times in their last chance but left the tying run at second base when the final out was made. Brett Solomen (Harrison Twp./Clearview) led a 15-hit attack by going 4-5 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
George Eisenhart (Harrison Twp./Clearview) went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI while Mike Bush (Manahawkin/Southern) extended his hitting streak to eight games with two hits including a double. Andy Oliver (Penns Grove/Penns Grove) also added two hits, one of which was a double, and one RBI.
Rowan jumped out to a 4-0 lead with single runs in the first two innings followed by two in the third frame. Stockton got on the board with an RBI single by Oliver in the fifth inning but Rowan answered with a run in the sixth for a 5-1 score.
Stockton pulled within 5-4 with three tallies in the top of the seventh as Barry Larro (Cedarville/Cumberland) and Solomen knocked consecutive RBI singles followed by Eisenhart with an RBI double. Rowan soon reestablished a big lead at 9-4 by scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Down to their last three outs, the Ospreys faced a five-run deficit and sent nine batters to the plate in their comeback try. Solomen started the rally with an RBI single and then Eisenhart doubled in a run. Erik Danser (Marlton/Cherokee), the next batter, hit an RBI double to score Solomen and make it a 9-7 game. A pair of strikeouts pushed Stockton to the brink but Oliver walked to load the bases and keep the Ospreys alive. A groundout to third brought the game to an anticlimactic end as Stockton fell 9-7.
Stockton and Rowan will play the back half of their two-game set tomorrow when the Ospreys host the Profs in Galloway at 3:30 pm.
