It was a historic day for the Catholic Church Wednesday as a new pope was elected.
The excitement began when white smoke was seen coming from the Vatican, a sign a new pope was chosen.
A short time later, Pope Francis of Argentina was introduced as the next leader of the church.
Although the announcement was made thousands of miles away, Catholic leaders here in South Jersey expressed their excitement to have a new leader of the church hailing from South America.
"Liberal or conservative, that's not important compared to the fact that he's shown that he's cared for the poor," Father Robert Gregorio of St. Joseph's Parish said.
Pope Francis is the first elected pope from the Americas.
Local church leaders add that though there might not be an immediate effect on Catholics in Southern New Jersey, the change should be exciting for Catholics around the world.
