NJ transit offering brand new buses - NBC40.net

New Jersey Transit is in the midst of a multi–million dollar make-over for its bus lines and riders are taking note.

They are brand new and if you've driven anywhere in South Jersey lately you've probably seen one.

"About time they got new buses. The old ones seem like they break down," rider Eloise Johnson said.

New Jersey transit began rolling more environmentally friendly and modern buses out late last year. Now hundreds are on the road and at least 1100 new buses will be in service by years end.

"We are utilizing the latest technology to help drive a more comfortable customer experience, doing so in a cleaner and greater manner," NJ Transit Spokesperson John Durso said.

The buses have flat open floor plans and kneel lower to the ground.

Rider Kelly Demarco who uses a wheel chair says the new buses are like night and day for her.

 "It's a lot quicker, it's more convenient and I don't feel like I'm inconveniencing the other passengers as much" Demarco said.

While New Jersey Transit is excited about upgrading its fleet some passengers are saying, in this case, older really is better.

"When one of them newer buses comes with hard seats... to ride that for an hour and a half it's a killer," rider Ramon Erazo said.

"The new ones are good too... but they just a little bit congested. Aint much room inside," rider Otha Pratt said.

The older buses are from the late 90's and have about a half million miles on them, some riders say comfort or not, these new buses were due.

 "You never get  anywhere on time and like I said, they always break down. So the new buses... On time," John said said.

New Jersey Transit says the majority of their older buses will pick up their last riders by years end.
