ATLANTIC CITY -
A Pleasantville activist is the recipient of Atlantic County's 2013 reverend doctor Martin Luther King Junior award.
Perry Mays, the chairperson of the "Stop the Violence Coalition of Atlantic County was given the award Friday by Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson.
The ceremony was part of the county's annual commemorative birthday celebration of Dr. King's life and legacy.
Mays, now retired from Atlanticare, is an organizer of several community groups and says that unity is the way to protect our communities.
"We're all one family, but if we don't make decisions now to take back our community and make it a safer place for everybody to live in, those that don't care, they will take this community back from us. And we don't want that to happen," said Mays
The 2007 award recipient Reverend John Howard gave Friday's keynote address.
