Officials closed Mainland Regional High School Friday morning as a precaution after a threat was received indicating there would be gun violence there.
Authorities say there was an implied threat to several schools in South Jersey, but Mainland High School was the only one in Atlantic County. Captain Dough Carman with the Linwood Police Department said they received the information from a student in a different school district outside of the county who got a text message saying that someone would get a gun and there would be violence, and that Mainland was listed as a potential target.
The police department notified the school, which opted to close for the day as a precaution, while authorities continue to investigate if the text messages are credible. Police say at this time, they will not release the name of the agency or the jurisdiction where the incident originated.
