This season's widespread flu virus is affecting millions across the country. From California to New York City, the sky high numbers have many asking what precautions they can take.
Local residents can take an alternative approach protect their health.
At Breathe Studio Pilates, clients are encouraged to take a holistic approach to maintain the health of mind and body.
"Looking at yourself as a whole, creating habits that become a lifestyle, that's the key," said Marlena Eger of Breathe Studio Pilates.
In addition to a balance of exercise and rest, Eger also encourages a proper diet to boost the immune system.
"Staying away from processed foods, genetically modified foods, just eating a more balanced plant based diet."
And many seem to be taking that advice this season as management at Bonterra Market in Egg Harbor Township is scrambling to keep shelves stocked with vegetables and other health supplements that help keep the flu away.
At Breathe Studio, the success of a proper diet has been witnessed first hand.
"We had a lot of success with clients that have stayed away from gluten. We vowed to cut out gluten and sugar for a while and processed foods and that's made a huge difference too," said Eger.
So while a proper diet goes a long way in the fight against the flu, a holistic approach combining physical and mental health may be the key to a healthy flu season.
"Another wonderful thing about doing a mind, body type exercise is it does relieve the stress and stress causes illness and cause a lot of negative effects on the body," said Eger
