NORTHFIELD -
A local senator who initially supported the bill to ban beach tags in towns that accept Sandy aid has now changed his mind.
Citing operating costs of beaches, Senator Jim Whelan said in a letter to Senators Sweeney and Doherty that he no longer supports their bill banning beach tag fees.
Whelan says that because federal aid does not cover costs such as paying life guards and cleanup crews, the costs of free beaches would fall on already burdened tax payers
